India Set To Achieve 50% Non Fossil Power Capacity By December

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Jun 21 (KNN) India is on track to achieve a landmark in its clean-energy journey: non‐fossil fuel power capacity (renewables, nuclear, hydro) is expected to reach 50% of total installed electricity capacity by December 2025.

This places India alongside frontrunners like China, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Brazil, and New Zealand which already boast similar figures.

Data shows India's overall installed capacity stands at ≈468 GW as of March 2025, with renewables-including large hydro-accounting for roughly 46.3%.

It's a jump from under 50% reliance on coal eleven years ago to coal now generating ~75% of actual electricity, illustrating a wide but fast-evolving gap between capacity and generation mix .

In FY 2024–25, India commissioned a record 30 GW of clean power, enough to meet the energy needs of 18 million homes.

Solar and wind investments have been buoyed by competitive tariffs-solar is now about 50% cheaper than new coal power.

However, generation from renewables lags behind installed capacity; in 2024, they supplied just 24 per cent of electricity, due to grid bottlenecks, storage constraints, and curtailment challenges.

Analysts warn that unlocking this capacity-through investments in transmission, energy storage, and better coordination-is crucial to meeting India's target of 500 GW of non‐fossil capacity by 2030.

Financially, Moody's estimates show India needs USS 385 bn through 2030-covering capacity additions and necessary transmission distribution upgrades.

As India accelerates this clean-energy transition, tackling structural challenges remains key. Land acquisition, grid integration, and finance workarounds must be resolved to translate capacity into reliable, sustainable power generation-crucial for meeting rising demand and climate commitments.
