FSB states Ukrainian terrorist assault on energy firm frustrated
(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has prevented a planned terrorist attack in the Krasnodar Region allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence, the agency announced on Tuesday.
A young man in his early 20s, reportedly recruited by Kiev, was detained for plotting to bomb an administrative building belonging to an energy company in the port city of Novorossiysk. The suspect was intercepted by FSB agents en route to retrieve a 2.5kg improvised explosive device from a hidden cache.
According to the FSB, Ukrainian operatives first contacted the man via WhatsApp in February. Initially, he was tasked with photographing military sites and monitoring the movements of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet vessels. Later, he was instructed to carry out a bombing in a public area.
The suspect has confessed to his involvement and is cooperating with investigators. A criminal case has been opened against him on charges of preparing a terrorist act and illegal possession of explosives.
Novorossiysk, a key hub for Russia’s oil exports and home to a Black Sea Fleet base, was the intended target. The FSB also warned that Ukrainian intelligence is increasingly using platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp to recruit individuals for sabotage and reconnaissance operations.
