Governor Newsom says stationing US marines to California is unlawful

(MENAFN) The Pentagon has announced that approximately 700 active-duty Marines from the 1st Marine Division will be deployed to the greater Los Angeles area to assist in protecting federal personnel and property following riots sparked by arrests of immigrants.

These Marines will work alongside National Guard troops, whose numbers are expected to rise to 2,000 by Wednesday. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasized the need to protect federal law enforcement officers, even as California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned the military deployment as “un-American” and an overreach by President Trump.

The protests began after immigration authorities arrested more than 40 individuals suspected of using fake employment documents. Demonstrations against the administration’s immigration policies quickly escalated into looting and violent clashes, resulting in at least 56 arrests.

Governor Newsom has urged the president to recall the National Guard, describing their deployment as unlawful and an infringement on California’s state rights.
