Indonesia Warns Unregulated Use of AI Risks Economic Disruption
(MENAFN) Unregulated use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) could threaten efforts toward inclusive economic development, Indonesia’s Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Stella Christie, has cautioned.
“To fully leverage the AI era, we must prioritize the ability to assess AI-generated results,” Stella emphasized, stressing that the real value “lies not in matching what AI can do, but in building the human capacity to verify and improve upon it,” according to a news agency.
Speaking at a symposium in Jakarta focused on human capital and digital integration, Stella highlighted both the opportunities and risks posed by AI. She acknowledged that the technology is reshaping the labor market by democratizing access to roles once reserved for specialists. However, she warned that deploying AI without proper human oversight could jeopardize economic stability.
The deputy minister cited a recent example where her team used AI to forecast Indonesia’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup. The output, she said, was misleading.
AI “lied” when the team used it to “calculate the probabilities,” Stella stated, noting that “it turned out that the AI only provided estimates. It didn’t actually compute all the possibilities.”
“It’s not enough to understand coding,” she asserted, pointing out that unless AI-generated results are critically examined, people could risk “basing decisions on false premises,” with “real consequences, economically and in terms of employment.”
Stella further urged that these insights be “embedded” into educational curricula, calling it “essential for building a competitive and resilient future.”
