Ghana Reports 34 New Mpox Cases

Accra: Ghana on Tuesday reported 34 new mpox cases.

According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), the total number of confirmed cases in the West African country has risen to 79, while none of the affected individuals have died so far.

The health service said in a statement that the recent upsurge in mpox cases is due to increased surveillance measures put in place, including contact tracing, continuous public sensitization, as well as faster detection and isolation.

The GHS emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene and avoiding close contact with individuals who are symptomatic in order to curb the spread of the virus.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, was first detected in laboratory monkeys in 1958. It is a rare viral disease transmitted through body fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated materials. The infection often causes fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
