US Appoints Jordanian Diplomat to ICJ
(MENAFN) Jordan’s representative to the United Nations, Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud, was officially selected as the newest judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Tuesday.
This appointment followed a vote held by both the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council.
Hmoud secured the necessary majority in each body to be confirmed for the role.
He was chosen to take over the position left vacant by the departure of Judge Nawaf Salam, who stepped down from his responsibilities.
Hmoud’s judicial tenure at the ICJ is scheduled to commence on May 27 and continue until February 5, 2027.
Judge Salam, who had been serving as the ICJ’s presiding judge, announced his resignation in January, nearly two years prior to the official conclusion of his assignment, which had been planned to end in early February 2027.
His departure was prompted by his appointment to lead the formation of a new cabinet in Lebanon.
The ICJ’s president is not appointed externally but is instead chosen through an internal election process.
This selection is conducted in secrecy by fellow judges of the world court and results in a three-year leadership mandate.
