Iranian President Heads to Oman on Diplomatic Mission
(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian left Tehran on Tuesday, heading to Muscat, Oman’s capital, for intensive high-level discussions focused on bilateral ties as well as pressing regional and global concerns.
Over the course of his two-day official trip, Pezeshkian is set to hold talks with Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, according to a statement posted on the Iranian president’s office website.
Before departing, Pezeshkian emphasized the visit’s priorities, which include strengthening Iran-Oman relations, addressing developments in West Asia—particularly the escalating crisis in Gaza—promoting peace across the region, and building consensus on shared challenges.
He highlighted plans to engage with senior Omani officials to explore cooperation opportunities spanning infrastructure such as road construction, shipping, trade, industry, scientific research, technology, and communication sectors.
Currently, bilateral trade between Iran and Oman reaches roughly $2.3 billion annually, Pezeshkian noted.
Since assuming office in July of last year, Muscat marks the 10th foreign destination for Pezeshkian.
Earlier this month, Mehdi Sanaei, the Iranian president’s political advisor, announced via social media platform X that the visit would culminate in signing multiple agreements. These include a preferential trade deal, mutual investment support contracts, enhanced customs collaboration, and a strategic roadmap to deepen bilateral ties.
This diplomatic mission occurs amid Oman’s ongoing role since April as a mediator facilitating indirect negotiations between Iranian and U.S. delegations on Tehran’s nuclear program and the potential easing of U.S. sanctions.
In a related development, Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq visited Tehran in May 2023 to discuss both regional and bilateral matters.
