Trump Grants Extension on EU Tariff Deadline
(MENAFN) United States Leader Donald Trump consented to prolong the deadline for imposing a 50 percent tariff on European Union products until July 9, following a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that von der Leyen had requested the extension during their discussion and that “talks will begin rapidly.” He referred to the decision to approve the request as “a privilege.”
Von der Leyen also acknowledged the call, stating that the EU is prepared to act “swiftly and decisively” to push forward negotiations.
“To reach a good deal, we would need the time until July 9,” she explained.
Earlier, Trump had threatened to enforce the hefty tariff on EU imports starting June 1, citing what he described as unfair trade practices and obstacles harming American businesses.
