Launch of North Korean Warship Fails
(MENAFN) A “serious accident” occurred in North Korea during the attempted deployment of a 5,000-ton military destroyer, based on the nation’s official media.
The failed launch took place on Wednesday and involved a major setback at the Chongjin Shipyard.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was present at the launch event, which involved a side-launch procedure.
He personally witnessed the malfunction and, according to local reports, delivered a harsh reprimand in response to the failure.
Sources indicate that the malfunction stemmed from a premature activation of the ship’s slide mechanism at the rear.
This caused the launching platforms to become misaligned and led to damage to the vessel.
Authorities blamed the failure on “inexperienced command and operational carelessness,” highlighting a lack of proper oversight and skill.
In response, Kim denounced the incident as a grievous display of “criminal negligence” and demanded swift repairs.
He ordered that the destroyer be fully restored ahead of a key gathering of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea scheduled for June.
The regime reportedly considers the failed launch not only a technical setback but also a political humiliation with potential consequences for the nation’s international standing.
