The attacks between the two neighbours began during the early hours of May 7 when India struck multiple locations in Pakistan with missiles. Pakistan then responded to the attacks on the Line of Control between the two countries located in India-administered Kashmir.
The attacks came after 26 tourists were killed in a tragic incident when terrorists opened fire in Pahalgam region of India's Jammu and Kashmir. India claimed Pakistan had involvement in the attacks. Pakistan has denied the accusations.
The Pakistani Prime Minister said that Pakistan desired peace in South Asia, and in this spirit, had agreed to the ceasefire understanding with India. He reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to uphold the understanding, as well as its iron resolve to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity at all costs.
He also made it clear that Pakistan would never permit the sanctity of the Indus Waters Treaty to be challenged.
Sharif also took to X after the phone call. "Spoke to my dear brother, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE. I conveyed Pakistan's deepest gratitude for the UAE's sincere diplomatic efforts to help defuse the recent crisis in South Asia. I thanked him for the UAE's unflinching support for Pakistan, through thick and thin," he said.
"[I] Reaffirmed Pakistan's abiding commitment to peace, as reflected in our decision to agree to the ceasefire understanding. I also underscored that we will always defend our sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the sanctity of the Indus Waters Treaty.
Alhamdulillah, the brotherly ties between Pakistan and the UAE will continue to grow, translating into mutually beneficial economic cooperation," concluded the Prime Minister.
