Kim Jong Un Faces Possible War Crime Probe
(MENAFN) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might potentially be subjected to a war crimes investigation at the International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague, according to a statement made on Monday by a former ICC president.
During a conference held in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, Song Sang-hyun addressed the matter, citing a news agency.
His remarks followed North Korea’s recent admission that it had deployed military personnel to assist Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Song highlighted that although Kim has not yet been formally referred to the ICC for alleged human rights violations within North Korea, there are now sufficient legal grounds for Ukraine to consider initiating a case against him.
"The time is right to bring Kim Jong Un before the ICC," he stated, emphasizing that North Korea’s military backing of Russia grants Ukraine the legitimacy to lodge a formal complaint.
He further mentioned that: “While a complaint filed by Ukraine would be very ideal, the ICC also has the authority to initiate an independent investigation," underscoring the court’s autonomy in launching a self-directed inquiry.
Song also urged the ICC to adopt firmer measures in addressing war crimes potentially committed by North Korea’s leadership and its partners.
