(MENAFN) The US Supreme Court has temporarily authorized President Donald Trump to invoke a rarely used wartime powers statute to accelerate the deportation of individuals suspected of gang affiliation. This ruling reverses a previous decision by a lower court that had paused the deportation of alleged Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador on March 15.

The Trump administration contended that these migrants were affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang and were "conducting irregular warfare" against the United States, which they argued warranted their removal under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act.

While the administration celebrates the Supreme Court's ruling as a victory, the justices stressed that individuals facing deportation under this statute must be allowed the opportunity to challenge their removal in court.

In an unsigned ruling released on Monday, the justices noted, "The notice must be afforded within a reasonable time and in such a manner as will allow them to actually seek habeas relief in the proper venue before such removal occurs." They added, "The only question is which court will resolve that challenge."
