Kashmir, despite its fertile land and favorable climate, has long been dependent on imports for various agricultural products, including seeds, fertilizers, and high-yield crop varieties. But this is changing for good now, as SKUAST-K's latest initiative focuses on developing indigenous alternatives that are both suitable for the region and environmentally sustainable. The objective is clear-minimize reliance on external sources while empowering local farmers with homegrown solutions.
Through extensive research, SKUAST-K scientists have identified native crops that can be improved through selective breeding and biotechnology. These efforts aim to produce high-yield, pest-resistant, and climate-resilient crops that reduce the need for imported seeds.
SKUAST-K has also been actively promoting organic farming practices. The university is training farmers in sustainable techniques that enhance soil fertility, reduce chemical dependency, and boost yield quality-thereby making locally grown produce competitive in national and international markets.
As water scarcity remains a major concern for farmers, SKUAST-K has introduced smart irrigation technologies such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting to optimize water usage. These techniques not only enhance productivity but also contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.
SKUAST-K's initiative includes IPM strategies that use natural predators, organic pesticides, and crop rotation methods to control pests efficiently. This reduces dependence on imported chemical pesticides while ensuring healthier crops.
SKUAST-K has also launched extensive training programs, workshops, and field demonstrations to educate farmers on best practices. The university has also introduced digital platforms where farmers can access real-time guidance, weather forecasts, and market trends.
The results of SKUAST-K's efforts are already visible. Many local farmers have successfully adopted these sustainable practices, leading to increased yield and improved soil health. The dependency on imported seeds and fertilizers is gradually declining, and Kashmir is moving toward self-reliance in agriculture. This initiative aligns perfectly with the government's broader mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), reinforcing the need for local solutions to global agricultural challenges.

The rise of Kokernag as a major tourist destination has had a positive economic impact on local communities. Increased footfall has led to a boom in local businesses, including handicrafts, hospitality, and transportation. Homestays and hotels are witnessing higher occupancy rates, and artisans are finding new opportunities to showcase their craftsmanship.
The new garden's growing tourism appeal is decentralizing the region's economic prospects and highlighting the importance of innovation, sustainability, and leadership in shaping a prosperous future.
