Senior diplomat says Kiev finishing off assaults on Russian residents
(MENAFN) Ukraine has escalated its attacks on Russian civilians in border and frontline regions, resulting in over 150 casualties in the past week, according to Rodion Miroshnik, a senior Russian diplomat overseeing Kiev’s alleged war crimes. In a statement on Telegram on Tuesday, Miroshnik accused Ukraine of targeting civilian areas even as diplomatic efforts between Russia and the US continue to seek a resolution to the conflict.
Between March 17 and 23, Ukrainian strikes killed 16 civilians and injured 134, Miroshnik claimed. He stated that the most affected areas included the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as Russia’s Belgorod, Kursk, and Kherson regions. According to his report, Ukraine fired nearly 2,000 munitions at civilian targets during this period.
Among the most severe incidents, he cited a cluster munition attack in the Donbass village of Gorlovka that wounded 12 people. Cluster munitions are banned in more than 100 countries, though Ukraine is not a signatory to the treaty prohibiting their use. Additionally, a drone strike in Chubarevka, located in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region, killed a paramedic. Another Ukrainian UAV strike reportedly hit Saratov Region—far from the front lines—injuring ten civilians.
Russia has repeatedly accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians throughout the conflict. These allegations come as Moscow and Washington engage in diplomatic talks, during which Russia agreed to a 30-day ceasefire on attacks against energy infrastructure following a phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. However, Russian officials claim Ukraine quickly violated the ceasefire by striking multiple oil facilities.
Despite these alleged breaches, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Russia intends to uphold the moratorium. Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned that Moscow reserves the right to retaliate if Ukraine continues its attacks, potentially responding in kind.
