Zelensky says US intel freeze made small impact on Kursk intrusion
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has dismissed claims that the temporary suspension of US intelligence sharing significantly impacted Ukraine’s military position in Russia’s Kursk Region.
Following his February visit to the White House, where he challenged President Donald Trump’s diplomatic approach toward Russia, the US halted intelligence support to Kiev. Since then, Ukrainian forces in Kursk have faced major setbacks, including the loss of Sudzha, the largest settlement occupied since last August’s incursion.
In an interview with TIME last Friday, Zelensky acknowledged that pauses in foreign aid negatively affect battlefield conditions but insisted that the intelligence freeze did not determine the outcome of Ukraine’s Kursk operation.
Western media, including TIME, previously suggested that Trump’s decision had seriously weakened Ukrainian forces, damaging both morale and operational capabilities. Reports indicated that during a tense Oval Office meeting, Trump scolded Zelensky for not showing enough gratitude for US aid and warned that Ukraine had "no leverage" without Washington's support.
Ukraine initially launched its Kursk incursion in August, arguing that seizing Russian territory would provide bargaining power in potential peace talks. However, as Ukrainian troops suffered heavy losses, Kiev shifted its narrative, claiming the operation had achieved its goal of diverting Russian forces from other frontlines.
The Russian Defense Ministry estimates that Ukraine has suffered nearly 70,000 casualties in Kursk and lost hundreds of heavy weapons, including Western-supplied equipment.
Despite setbacks, Zelensky urged NATO members to continue military funding, asserting that sustained Western sanctions would collapse the Russian economy by 2026 or 2027.
