Turkish authorities detain over 1,400 amid protests over mayor's arrest

(MENAFN) Turkish authorities have detained 1,418 individuals in connection with nationwide protests sparked by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated on Tuesday. Of those apprehended, 979 remain in custody, while 478 will face judicial proceedings, according to Yerlikaya's post on the social media platform X.

Simultaneously, Ozgur Ozel, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), announced plans to conclude rallies in Istanbul's Sarachane district by the end of Tuesday.

The protests, which have drawn tens of thousands into the streets since March 19, erupted after Imamoglu, a CHP member viewed as a formidable challenger to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in upcoming elections, was detained on allegations of corruption and terror ties.

On Monday, Erdogan condemned the CHP, accusing the party and its supporters of instigating a "movement of violence" during the demonstrations. He asserted that the CHP should be held accountable for "injured police officers, vandalized shops, and damaged public property."
