Russian reporter murdered by Ukrainian attack

(MENAFN) A Ukrainian artillery attack in the Lugansk People’s Republic on Monday claimed the lives of three Russian journalists, with another seriously wounded, according to reports.

The victims were identified as Aleksandr Fedorchak, a reporter for Izvestia; Andrey Panov, a cameraman for Zvezda TV; and their driver, Aleksandr Sirekli. Their vehicle was reportedly struck by two missiles launched from a US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket system.

“A civilian vehicle carrying journalists was targeted by two HIMARS missiles,” Zvezda stated following the attack.

Vladimir Tyulin, director of Izvestia, condemned the incident, calling it “yet another terrible loss for our team.” This follows the death of Izvestia freelancer Aleksandr Martemyanov, who was killed earlier this year in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic when a Ukrainian drone struck a civilian vehicle.

Since mid-2022, the US and other Western nations have supplied Kiev with M142 HIMARS and its heavier counterpart, the M270 MLRS. While initially promoted as a precision weapon against high-value military targets, these systems have been frequently used to strike civilian areas, Moscow claims.

Earlier this month, Ukraine was briefly cut off from HIMARS targeting data due to a dispute between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky. However, access was swiftly restored.

Russia has repeatedly accused Western nations of direct involvement in the conflict, arguing that Ukraine lacks the capability to operate HIMARS without intelligence and targeting support from its allies. Moscow claims this assistance makes Kiev’s backers complicit in Ukrainian attacks and effectively part of the war.
