Government Targets Rs 20 Trillion EV Market With IIT Madras Support
The institute has launched over 15 projects through its Department of Engineering Design, focusing on diverse aspects such as zero-emission trucking, policy advocacy, and safety enablement.
These projects encompass India-centric technological advancements, field studies, policy recommendations, and skilling programs. To bolster these initiatives, six state-of-the-art labs have been established within the department to support research and hands-on project work.
“We have adopted a seven-sided approach to eMobility, engaging with Indian industries, government bodies, and international experts,” said C S Shankar Ram, Head of the Department of Engineering Design at IIT Madras.
A key focus remains on producing top-tier engineers through specialized courses, including a dual degree in eMobility and certification programs for professionals. Additionally, the department has introduced a web-enabled MTech program featuring lab sessions.
IIT Madras has also launched a Centre of Excellence for Zero Emission Trucking, a growing sector in India, working closely with stakeholders on policy, technical, and commercial matters.
The department is actively collaborating with the Government of India and the Tamil Nadu government on various eMobility projects.
Professor Karthick Athmanathan highlighted the holistic approach needed for eMobility success, emphasising not just hardware like chargers and batteries but also energy management, policy frameworks, and cost analysis tailored to Indian conditions.
“This is just the beginning. We aim to expand faculty development programs, increase nationwide skilling resources, and strengthen industry-academia-government collaboration to achieve India's broader eMobility goals,” added Ram.
