Law enforcement push Russian news agency journalist throughout demonstrations in Istanbul

(MENAFN) Turkish riot police forcefully shoved RT correspondent Yasin Eken on Sunday evening while he was reporting on mass protests in support of detained Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

A group of officers in full riot gear, some wearing gas masks, approached Eken and his cameraman, aggressively pushing them back. In footage of the incident, Eken can be heard asking, “What have I done?” Following the altercation, he sought medical attention at a hospital.

The demonstrations, now in their fifth consecutive day, have spread across Istanbul, Ankara, and other major cities. In some instances, police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds.

The opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has called on supporters to protest Imamoglu’s detention. The mayor, who previously ran for vice president in 2023, was arrested on Wednesday on charges of corruption and alleged ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which Türkiye designates as a terrorist organization.

On Sunday, the Interior Ministry suspended Imamoglu from office. He has denied all allegations, calling the case politically motivated.
