Canada Says It’s Confident in Resolving Trade Conflict with U.S.

(MENAFN) Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, expressed optimism regarding her nation’s capability to overcome the current trade conflict sparked by a series of tariffs imposed by United States Leader Donald Trump.

During an interview on a news agency program, Joly highlighted Canada’s important role as a trading partner to the US, stating: "We are the biggest customer of the US. We buy more from the Americans than China, Japan, the UK and France combined."

The Trump administration has enforced a 25 percent duty on steel and aluminum ship-ins from Canada, with plans to present additional "reciprocal" tariffs, which will take effect on April 2.

Joly acknowledged that the tariffs and rising expenses are significant concerns for Canadians, particularly as the country approaches its federal election.

She emphasized the strong economic bond between Canada and the United States, stating: "We have the most leverage in the world when it comes to the US."

She also pointed out that the effects of these tariffs are not only felt by Canadians but also by "hardworking Americans."

Joly said that US citizens could play an essential role in resolving the trade dispute, stating furthermore: "We think that ultimately the only ones that will be able to help us win this war ... are the Americans themselves because they're the ones that can send a message to their lawmakers."
