Francophone Ambassadors Condemn M23 Rebel Attack in Congo

(MENAFN) The Group of Francophone Ambassadors has condemned the M23 rebel group's offensive in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, calling for an immediate halt to the fighting.

In a unified statement released on Thursday, following the rebels' capture of the mineral-rich town of Walikale in North Kivu district, the diplomats expressed alarm over the rapid decline in security in eastern Congo since the start of the year due to the ongoing conflict.

“We are concerned about the devastating humanitarian consequences of this offensive and the human rights violations committed against the population, in particular cases of sexual violence against women and the forced recruitment of child soldiers,” the ambassadors stated in a declaration delivered by Swiss Ambassador Chasper Sarott.
