2024 worldwide migrant death toll shatters records

(MENAFN) On Friday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) released data indicating that 2024 has become the deadliest year on record for migrants, with over 8,938 lives lost.

This figure surpasses the previous year's total of 8,747, marking a continuous five-year increase in migrant fatalities.

IOM Deputy Director General for Operations Ugochi Daniels stated: "The tragedy of the growing number of migrant deaths worldwide is both unacceptable and preventable. Behind every number is a human being, someone for whom the loss is devastating."

The data indicated a surge in fatalities across various regions in 2024, with 2,778 deaths in Asia, 2,242 in Africa, and 233 in Europe. Notably, the Mediterranean Sea alone saw over 2,452 deaths, emphasizing the urgent need for robust search and rescue operations as well as safe, legal migration alternatives to avoid such perilous journeys.
