Trump Taps Boeing For F-47, Next-Gen Fighter Jet

(MENAFN- The Rio Times) President Donald Trump announced Boeing's contract to build the F-47, a sixth-generation fighter jet, during an Oval Office address on March 21, 2025.

Joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Air Force Chief of Staff General David Allvin, Trump touted the jet as the most advanced ever, promising unmatched stealth and lethality.

Trump called the F-47“practically invisible,” a nod to its cutting-edge technology and his position as the 47th U.S. president. He withheld details on cost and design, arguing that revealing them risks exposing its capabilities.

Allvin praised the jet's ability to outmatch any adversary, while Trump claimed a prototype has flown secretly for five years. Boeing's deal, valued at over $20 billion for development, aims to secure U.S. air dominance amid rising threats from China and Russia.

In addition, the F-47 anchors the Next Generation Air Dominance program, integrating manned jets with drones for a networked edge. Total costs could reach hundreds of billions over decades.

The jet replaces the aging F-22, countering China's J-20 and Russia's advances in air defenses and stealth fighters. Experts expect broadband stealth, advanced sensors, and long-range capabilities tailored for the Indo-Pacific.

Boeing beat Lockheed Martin, signaling a shift after years of dominance by its rival. For Boeing , this contract strengthens its defense arm, strained by past struggles with tankers and commercial delays.
The Race for Air Superiority in a Shifting Global Landscape
The St. Louis facility will drive production, creating jobs and boosting the firm's $300 million-per-jet project. Trump hinted at ally interest, though he offered no firm sales plans.

Development began in the mid-2010s, evolving under Trump after doubts during Biden's term over costs and drone relevance. A prototype flew by 2020, showcasing rapid innovation.

Now, the F-47 targets service by the 2030s, a timeline testing Boeing's execution amid recent setbacks. Global tensions underscore the stakes, with China and Russia pushing their own next-gen fighters.

The F-47's success hinges on delivering its promised edge. Observers note Boeing must overcome challenges to meet expectations set by Trump's bold claims. Trump's announcement blends strategy and symbolism, linking his presidency to military might.

Yet, questions linger over feasibility and funding. The jet's debut marks a pivotal moment, balancing innovation with practical demands in a competitive world.

This move positions the U.S. to maintain air superiority, a priority since World War II. Allvin stressed dominance requires constant effort, not entitlement. As Boeing ramps up, the F-47's journey will shape defense and economic outcomes for decades.
