Heathrow Airport Shut: Emirates, Etihad Cancel Flights, Monitor Situation Closely

UAE carriers Emirates and Etihad have announced on Friday the cancellation of a number of their flights to and from London's Heathrow Aitport (LHR) due to the closure of the busy UK airport .

Heathrow has said earlier that it will be shut until midnight on March 21 due to a significant power outage that resulted from a fire at an electrical substation supplying the airport. It said that the closure was "to maintain the safety of our passengers and colleagues".

Etihad said that the flights that will be cancelled are:

EY63 Abu Dhabi to LHR
EY64 LHR to Abu Dhabi
EY65 Abu Dhabi to LHR
EY66 LHR to Abu Dhabi

However, Etihad's EY61 service from Abu Dhabi to London is being diverted into Frankfurt Airport, it added in a statement sent to Khaleej Times.

Emirates also has announced that its flights to and from Heathrow on Friday will be cancelled.

Emirates flights EK001/002, EK029/030 and EK031/032 (all Dubai-Heathrow-Dubai) will be cancelled as a result.

Flights EK008 from Heathrow to Dubai, EK003/004 and EK005/006 will also be scrapped.

"Passengers booked or connecting onto the cancelled flights to London Heathrow will not be accepted for travel. We're monitoring the situation closely and will update our customers as the situation develops," the UAE carrier said in a statement.

The UK airport has advised passengers to expect significant disruption over the coming days and said they should not travel to the airport under any circumstances until it opens.

Heathrow Airport is the primary and largest international airport serving London, the capital and most populous city of England and the UK.

It was the world's second-busiest international airport in 2024 behind Dubai, according to travel data firm OAG.

The London Fire Brigade said its crews was tackling the fire in Hayes in west London and had evacuated around 150 people as a precaution.
