Mozambique's Cabo Delgado Witnesses Displacement Disaster

(MENAFN) In February, at least 10,000 individuals were forced to flee their homes in the violence-stricken northern area of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, according to a report released by a UN agency on Wednesday.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed that 93 percent of these displacements were the result of “attacks or fears of the attacks.”

The report highlighted that the displaced individuals prioritized food and shelter as their most urgent needs.

The spokesperson for the Council of Ministers, Inocencio Impissa, referred to the situation as both “horrendous” and “concerning,” expressing deep concern over the rising numbers of displaced people.

Speaking to a news agency, Impissa mentioned that the government of Mozambique is collaborating with security forces to enhance safety measures for those affected.

“Having this huge number of people displaced in a single month is very depressing.

But with support from humanitarian agencies, we are making sure that those displaced by the conflict in the region are provided with food, shelter and medical care,” Impissa explained.
