Google settles racial bias lawsuit for USD28 mn

(MENAFN) On Wednesday, Google settled a class-action lawsuit for $28 million following allegations of racial bias in salary and career growth, according to reports released by a news agency.

Previous worker Ana Cantu filed the lawsuit in 2021, claiming that Hispanic, Latino, Native American, and and employees from other minority communities were disproportionately assigned to underpaid roles in comparison to their white and Asian counterparts.

According to the lawsuit, a released confidential file uncovered considerable pay disparities for similar roles, further validating claims of deep-rooted inequities.

The settlement covers a minimum of 6,632 employees who were employed at Google from February 15, 2018, to December 31, 2024. Provisional approval for the agreement has been granted by a California judge.

Google rejected any allegations of misconduct but stated that it had “reached a resolution.” A representative for the company affirmed Google’s ongoing commitment to equitable pay, recruitment, and career progression policies.

This case unfolds against the backdrop of a shifting corporate landscape regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). In the previous months, Google, Meta, Amazon, and other major corporations have scaled back DEI programs. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has advocated for the removal of these programs from government agencies and federal contractors.
