Turkey reiterates its dedication to combating Islamophobia
(MENAFN) On the sixth anniversary of the Christchurch mosque attacks in New Zealand, Türkiye has reiterated its dedication to combating Islamophobia and religious hatred.
In a statement marking the International Day to Combat Islamophobia, the Turkish Foreign Ministry emphasized the dangers of anti-Muslim sentiment, not only for Muslims but also for global peace and social harmony. The ministry honored the 51 victims of the 2019 attack and called for intensified international efforts to counter hatred against Islam.
The tragic attack occurred on March 15, 2019, when Australian white supremacist Brenton Tarrant opened fire at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre, killing 51 people and injuring 40 others. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2020—the first such ruling in New Zealand’s history.
