Russian news agency starts ad campaign in India
(MENAFN) Russian news outlet RT has rolled out an advertising campaign in India featuring Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as key global influencers. Billboards displayed in upscale areas of New Delhi showcase the two leaders alongside the slogan “India-Russia: Driving Global Change,” written in Hindi, Russian, and English.
The campaign coincides with the Raisina Dialogue, a major international conference hosted in India. The images emphasize the longstanding partnership between New Delhi and Moscow, which Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has described as having “withstood the test of time.”
The Russian Embassy in India shared photos of the billboards last week while extending Holi greetings, calling the campaign a symbol of the "decades of trusted friendship" between the two nations. The initiative has caught the attention of local media, with News18 noting that Russia’s assertive messaging has sparked curiosity about its strategic intentions and the evolving India-Russia relationship.
Putin recently acknowledged world leaders, including Modi, US President Donald Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, for their efforts to promote peace in Ukraine. The Russian leader is also expected to visit India later this year for a bilateral summit with Modi.
India has maintained a delicate diplomatic balance in the Ukraine conflict, engaging with both the West and Russia while prioritizing its economic and security interests. Despite Western pressure, New Delhi continues to strengthen ties with Moscow, particularly in energy and defense.
In January, US sanctions under then-President Joe Biden disrupted Russian oil shipments to India, briefly reducing imports by nearly 25% in February. However, trade sources and shipping data indicate that supplies have since rebounded to near previous levels.
Russia remains India’s primary defense supplier, with New Delhi recently signing a $248 million deal with Rosoboronexport to acquire engines for its T-72 tanks. Moscow has also proposed a collaboration with India to develop an export version of the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, suggesting that production could be localized in India.
