Europol Warns of AI's Growing Role in Organized Crime

(MENAFN) Artificial intelligence (AI) is drastically transforming the landscape of organized crime by automating as well as amplifying criminal operations, while simultaneously helping criminals evade detection by authorities, Europol cautioned on Tuesday in its Serious and Organized Crime Threat Assessment report.

Europol emphasized that the very characteristics that make AI revolutionary — such as its accessibility, flexibility, and advanced nature — also make it a highly effective tool for criminal organizations. The agency stated, “The same qualities that make AI revolutionary — accessibility, adaptability and sophistication — also make it a powerful tool for criminal networks.”

According to the report, criminals are leveraging AI not only to enhance their criminal activities but also to drive greater efficiency in their operations. The report noted that generative AI helps criminals target a broader range of victims by generating messages in various languages.

Moreover, AI-powered voice cloning and live video deepfakes are enabling new forms of fraud as well as identity theft.

The automation abilities of AI are also increasing the efficiency of criminal enterprises by facilitating the creation of highly advanced malware, Europol explained.

Furthermore, the report warned that the rise of fully autonomous AI systems could lead to entirely AI-driven criminal organizations, signaling the dawn of a new chapter in the evolution of organized crime.
