Violent incident at S-Africa's remote Antarctic research station sparked calls for urgent action

(MENAFN) A violent incident at South Africa's remote Antarctic research station, Sanae IV, has sparked calls for urgent action after a team member allegedly attacked and threatened to kill a colleague.

Located approximately 80 kilometers inland on a mountain summit surrounded by glaciers, Sanae IV is nearly unreachable during the harsh Antarctic winter. The ten-member team stationed there is set to remain for at least ten more months, making any outside intervention extremely difficult.

The incident was first reported by The Sunday Times, which obtained an email from one of the researchers at the base. The names of both the alleged attacker and the accuser have been withheld. The email expressed grave concerns over the team member’s behavior, which had reportedly raised red flags even before the icebreaking supply ship left them in December.

According to the message, the individual's behavior had escalated dangerously. “He physically assaulted [name withheld], which is a serious violation of personal safety and workplace norms,” the letter stated. It also described threats of violence: “Furthermore, he threatened to kill [name withheld], creating an environment of fear and intimidation.” The author expressed deep concern for their own safety, fearing they might be the next target.

South Africa’s Environment Minister, Dion George, acknowledged the situation but downplayed its severity, describing it as a result of "cabin fever" in close quarters. He confirmed that a physical altercation took place between the accused team member and the team leader, triggered by a schedule change related to a weather-dependent task.

George stated that the individual had shown remorse and agreed to a psychological reevaluation. While he assured that an intervention was underway, he did not specify what measures were being considered to ensure the safety of the team.
