Trump confirms discussions with Putin regarding Ukraine
(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has confirmed that Washington held discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday regarding a potential resolution to the Ukraine conflict. However, Trump’s announcement on Truth Social initially caused confusion, as it appeared he had spoken with Putin directly. The White House later clarified that the talks were conducted by US special envoy Steve Witkoff during his visit to Moscow.
In his statement, Trump described the discussions as productive but expressed deep concern over thousands of Ukrainian troops reportedly surrounded by Russian forces in Russia’s Kursk Region. He urged Putin to allow them safe passage and pleaded for their survival.
“We had very good and productive discussions with President Vladimir Putin of Russia yesterday, and there is a very good chance that this horrible, bloody war can finally come to an end. BUT, AT THIS VERY MOMENT, THOUSANDS OF UKRAINIAN TROOPS ARE COMPLETELY SURROUNDED BY THE RUSSIAN MILITARY, AND IN A VERY BAD AND VULNERABLE POSITION. I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II. God bless them all!!!” Trump wrote.
On Thursday, Putin acknowledged the US-backed proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, which was recently agreed upon with Ukrainian officials. However, he stressed that the terms must be clearly defined. The Russian president has previously voiced skepticism about short-term pauses, arguing that they could be used by Ukraine to reinforce its military rather than advance peace efforts.
“These 30 days—how will they be used? To continue forced mobilization in Ukraine? To receive more arms supplies? To train newly mobilized units? Or will none of this happen?” Putin questioned.
He also addressed the fate of Ukrainian troops cut off in Kursk Region, who had crossed into Russian territory in August 2024. Putin suggested that their future remains uncertain under a ceasefire agreement.
“Are we supposed to let them out after they committed mass war crimes against civilians? Will the Ukrainian leadership tell them to lay down their arms and just surrender?” he asked.
Meanwhile, Russian General Staff Chief Valery Gerasimov stated that Russian forces have recaptured 86% of the territory Ukraine occupied in August 2024, with the remaining Ukrainian troops now “encircled” and “isolated..
