Vance studies Poland’s nuke demand

(MENAFN) US Vice President J.D. Vance has expressed skepticism that President Donald trump would support deploying American nuclear weapons in Poland.

Speaking to Fox News on Thursday, Vance was asked about Warsaw’s proposal to host US strategic missiles as a deterrent against potential Russian aggression. “I haven’t discussed this issue with the president, but I’d be shocked if he supported moving nuclear weapons further east into Europe,” he responded.

Polish President Andrzej Duda recently stated that he had discussed the idea with US special envoy Keith Kellogg, according to the Financial Times. Duda previously made a similar request to the Biden administration in 2022, but it was not approved.

Vance contrasted Trump’s diplomatic approach with that of “people like Joe Biden,” whom he accused of sleepwalking into a nuclear conflict by allowing the war in Ukraine to drag on. He claimed that Trump has pursued “tough diplomacy” by mobilizing his administration to broker a resolution to the conflict.

Meanwhile, Polish leaders have been pushing for increased militarization, citing an alleged threat from Moscow. Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently warned that Russia could launch a full-scale offensive against a larger target than Ukraine within three to four years, arguing that Poland must expand its military and serve as NATO’s eastern stronghold.

Russia has repeatedly dismissed claims that it poses a military threat to European NATO states. President Vladimir Putin has called such warnings “nonsense,” accusing EU leaders of using them to justify rising defense budgets.

While Trump has pushed for European NATO members to take greater responsibility for their own security, he has also criticized the idea of an arms race and suggested that nuclear-armed nations should work toward eliminating their arsenals.
