Zelensky finds himself in political ‘final act’

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's tenure is nearing its end, according to a senior official in Kiev, as reported by the Financial Times. This follows increasing concerns in Washington regarding his legitimacy, particularly as his presidential term officially expired in May 2024. Despite this, Zelensky has refused to call for new elections, citing the martial law imposed due to the ongoing conflict with Russia.

As the US seeks ways to end the hostilities, President Donald Trump briefly suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, but these were reinstated after a recent meeting in Saudi Arabia.

A senior Ukrainian official acknowledged that Zelensky’s presidency is in its final phase, amid escalating speculation about how long he will remain in power. The official described the conflict with Russia as still in an active phase, with Ukrainian forces confident they can continue for at least six more months without US support. However, they could extend this period if the EU steps in with aid and domestic arms production increases.

Meanwhile, Zelensky’s political opposition is already preparing for upcoming elections, forming alliances, and reaching out to US officials, including those in the Trump administration. Zelensky’s refusal to hold elections has sparked criticism, with Trump calling him a “dictator without elections.” Russian President Vladimir Putin also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, declaring that only the Ukrainian parliament holds legitimate authority.
