DR Congo requests emergency UN session to address worsening situation in Goma
(MENAFN) The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has requested an emergency session of the UN Human Rights Council to address the worsening situation in Goma, which was recently seized by M23 rebels. The session is set for February 7 in Geneva.
The M23's capture of Goma last week has heightened tensions in the mineral-rich eastern region, where the ongoing conflict has triggered a surge in human rights violations, including executions, bombings of displacement camps, and sexual violence, as reported by the UN's Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The DRC has long struggled with violence in the east, where numerous armed groups, including M23, have clashed with local authorities. The mineral wealth in the region, including gold and diamonds, has fueled this prolonged instability. With the latest rebel advance, the UN has raised alarms about the potential for the conflict to escalate further.
The DRC government continues to accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels, although Kigali denies these claims, further straining relations between the two countries. Regional efforts to resolve the crisis are ongoing, with a summit scheduled for February 7-8 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, involving leaders from multiple African nations.
Additionally, Russia has called for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of M23 forces, urging a return to negotiations within existing regional peacekeeping frameworks to prevent the situation from spiraling into a larger interstate conflict.
