Lebanon creates first comprehensive govt in more than two years

(MENAFN) Lebanon has established its first full government since 2022, marking a significant step in the country's recovery following conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. On Saturday, President Joseph Aoun announced the resignation of the caretaker government and officially invited Prime Minister Nawaf Salam to form a new cabinet.

Salam's cabinet consists of 24 ministers, including five women, and follows over three weeks of Political deadlock, particularly regarding the appointment of Shiite ministers, traditionally selected by Hezbollah and its ally, the Amal party. This time, Salam resisted their demands, leading to the breakthrough.

The formation of the government comes amidst Lebanon's deepening economic crisis, worsened by the 2020 Beirut port explosion, COVID-19, and political instability. In 2023, Hezbollah joined Hamas in its conflict with Israel, leading to a low-intensity campaign along the Lebanese-Israeli border. The ceasefire agreement signed by Hezbollah in late November has led to a withdrawal of the group from southern Lebanon, allowing the Lebanese Army and UN peacekeepers to patrol the area.
