China: Terrorist Groups In Afghanistan Threaten Regional Security

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Fu Cong, China's Ambassador to the United Nations, said on Monday during a Security Council meeting that ISIS and several other terrorist groups are active in Afghanistan and are collaborating with each other. He emphasized that these groups could pose a threat to regional and global security.

The Chinese Ambassador also mentioned the presence of ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and the East Turkestan Movement (a Uyghur Islamist group from China) in Afghanistan.

He called on the Taliban government to take“concrete and specific actions to eliminate terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan.”

Fu Cong further clarified that China is committed to supporting the efforts of Central Asian countries and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in cooperating with the Taliban to dismantle terrorist groups in Afghanistan.

He emphasized that Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and the East Turkestan Movement are active in Afghanistan. These groups continue to operate despite international efforts to combat them.

The Chinese representative to the United Nations made these statements while China has maintained good relations with the Taliban following its control over Afghanistan.

China, while fostering ties with the Taliban, considers the presence and activities of terrorist groups in Afghanistan a serious threat to regional security and stability.

The rivalry between major global powers has allowed terrorist groups to exploit the situation for their own benefit, further complicating efforts to tackle terrorism effectively.

Although terrorism is a global threat, some countries do not categorize certain groups as terrorists. For example, the U.S. does not classify the East Turkestan Movement as a terrorist group.

The United Nations Security Council held a meeting on Monday to discuss the threat of ISIS in Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Africa. During the meeting, representatives of Security Council member states considered the presence of ISIS in these regions a threat to“peace and security” worldwide.

The U.S. representative stated that ISIS has turned Africa into its main center of attacks and pointed out that Afghanistan and Pakistan are the main recruitment areas for ISIS-Khorasan.

The complex geopolitical dynamics, including relationships with the Taliban and global rivalries, create a breeding ground for terrorism. The world must work together to identify and eliminate such threats.

In this context, the differing views on what constitutes a terrorist group further complicate international cooperation. A unified approach is crucial for global peace and security.
