The Risks of Shadow AI: A Growing Concern for Companies

(MENAFN) Ilkem Ozar, General Manager of Kaspersky Turkey, cautioned that businesses using uncontrolled artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly susceptible to risks associated with “Shadow AI,” which can lead to significant data security and compliance challenges.

Shadow AI describes the use of AI tools by employees or teams without the awareness or permission from the organization’s IT department, similar to the earlier phenomenon of “Shadow IT.” This unauthorized use of technology raises concerns about various risks, such as data security violations, regulatory non-compliance, and incorrect results.

These AI tools, which are typically deployed without formal approval, present security risks, such as unauthorized data uploads to AI platforms, which could lead to data breaches and compliance problems.

“Assuming your data stays only with you when using an AI application can be misleading,” Ozar shared with Anadolu.

"These systems operate on cloud-based platforms, processing uploaded data, which means the data could reside in the system’s memory and be indirectly accessed by other users later," she added.
