EU states grow increasingly frustrated with von der Leyen

(MENAFN) EU member states are growing increasingly frustrated with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s approach to foreign policy, according to a report by Politico. The latest dissatisfaction stems from von der Leyen's unilateral decision to finalize a partnership agreement with Jordan, which was announced last week after talks with King Abdullah II. The deal aims to help Jordan manage the socio-economic impact of the Syrian crisis and foster investment opportunities, supported by €3 billion in funding. However, von der Leyen allocated these funds without consulting EU member states, leading to frustration among diplomats, with some describing her actions as a "fait accompli."

This move adds to a broader pattern of von der Leyen's handling of foreign policy, which many EU officials believe has been increasingly centralized within the European Commission, a shift away from the traditional role of the European Council and the EU’s foreign affairs representative. Critics argue that such concentration of power undermines the EU's foundational treaties, which place foreign policy under the control of member states. This has caused tension between von der Leyen and other EU leaders, including former European Council President Charles Michel and former EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.

The frustrations with von der Leyen are not new, with past concerns regarding her focus on climate and economic challenges, as well as allegations of nepotism and non-transparency in her policies. Since her reelection, she has shifted her focus more towards EU competitiveness and defense.
