Trump says ‘no rush’ to talk to China’s Xi

(MENAFN) US President Donald trump has expressed that he is in "no rush" to engage in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, despite ongoing trade tensions between the two nations. Following the Trump administration's announcement of an additional 10% tariff on all Chinese imports, China responded by filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization and imposed retaliatory tariffs on key US exports such as coal, LNG, crude oil, and agricultural machinery. China also launched an antitrust investigation into Google, signaling that the dispute could extend into the tech sector.

When asked about the timing of a potential conversation with Xi, Trump said he would speak to the Chinese leader "at the appropriate time" and downplayed the significance of China's retaliatory tariffs, stating that he was not in a hurry. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt confirmed that no call with Xi has been scheduled yet, though China had already reached out for discussions.

Meanwhile, China expressed hope that the US would work with Beijing to maintain stable and sustainable relations between the two countries. Trump's recent actions also include imposing and then suspending tariffs on Canada and Mexico after negotiations with their leaders, and threatening the EU with tariffs unless it purchases more US oil and gas. This has raised concerns in Europe about a potential trade war with the US. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen indicated that the EU is open to negotiations but would defend its interests when necessary.
