Greenland moves to prohibit foreign political donations

(MENAFN) Greenland is moving to prohibit foreign Political donations in light of concerns about external influence in its upcoming election and U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated interest in annexing the island. Despite Greenland and Denmark rejecting Trump's offer, the U.S. president has suggested using military force to take control of the resource-rich territory.

In response, Greenland's parliament introduced a bill to safeguard the integrity of the April election by banning foreign contributions and capping donations to local political campaigns. The legislation aims to prevent anonymous and overseas funding and sets limits on the amount that can be donated by individuals or organizations.

Greenland, which has been self-governing since 1979, remains wary of foreign interference, especially given Trump's previous threats. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's recent conversation with Trump raised alarm in Denmark, reinforcing concerns over the U.S.'s increasing interest in Greenland, which houses a U.S. military base.
