Syrian civil war returns after opposition fighters capture Aleppo

(MENAFN) The recent capture of Aleppo by Syrian opposition fighters has drawn renewed attention to the ongoing Syrian civil war, disrupting frontlines that had remained relatively dormant for years. This shift in control has significant implications for the region and beyond. The surprise offensive launched by opposition fighters began on November 26, with forces advancing from areas to the north and northwest of Aleppo. By November 29-30, they had successfully entered the city, forcing government troops to retreat.

This marks the first time since 2016 that control of Aleppo has changed hands. In that year, government forces, bolstered by support from Russia and Iran, successfully reclaimed the city from opposition fighters who had previously controlled its eastern districts. The recent capture of the city by opposition forces is a major setback for the regime of Bashar al-Assad, which had held the city for several years.

After declaring control over areas in Hama province, the opposition fighters have pushed their advance further into areas to the south and southwest of Aleppo. This military success has reignited tensions and fears of a broader escalation. The Syrian government, meanwhile, has vowed to retaliate, aiming to reclaim the lost territories.

In response to the opposition’s gains, Russia, which has provided extensive military support to President Bashar al-Assad’s regime since 2015, has been conducting airstrikes in Syria. These strikes are part of Russia’s broader effort to assist the Syrian government’s forces and stabilize their hold on the region. The latest developments signal a potential new phase in the prolonged conflict.
