US House Marks Silence for San Diego Islamic Center Shooting Victims

(MENAFN) Members of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday held a moment of silence to remember the victims killed in the recent attack at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Speaking before lawmakers, Congresswoman Sara Jacobs said she addressed the chamber “with a heavy heart” as she paid tribute to Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha and Nadir Awad, who lost their lives after two teenage gunmen carried out a shooting at the mosque complex on Monday.

Jacobs described the Islamic center as an important part of the Clairemont community, calling it a place associated with safety, comfort and peace.

“And unfortunately, that was ripped away from our community by two people armed with guns and hate.”

She also argued that the attack reflected a broader failure to confront growing anti-Muslim hatred and intolerance in the United States.

“This tragedy didn't happen in a vacuum. We let it happen by refusing to actually do something and stop the rise of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hate and hatred of all kinds. For decades, the Islamic Center has been the target of hate speech and vandalism and yelling by people driving by,” she said.

Jacobs added that the number of casualties could have been significantly higher if not for people at the scene who acted quickly to shield and protect others during the attack.
