Two Dead as Floods Ravage Türkiye's Hatay Province
(MENAFN) Torrential overnight rainfall unleashed catastrophic flooding across Türkiye's southern province of Hatay on Thursday, triggering road collapses, structural failures, and a rising death toll of at least two, a Turkish news agency reported.
The hardest-hit area was the Antakya district, where a hillside residence buckled under the weight of saturated earth and collapsed onto a road below. Emergency crews — comprising medical teams, firefighters, police, and disaster management officials — rushed to the scene, pulling three survivors from the rubble. One person was found dead.
A second fatality was recorded in a separate incident, when a vehicle plunged into a dry streambed after the road beneath it gave way under floodwaters, killing the driver on impact.
The deluge paralysed road networks across the province, forcing the temporary closure of multiple routes and snarling traffic throughout the region. Rising waters also swamped homes and businesses across several districts, leaving residents trapped inside as firefighters worked to reach them.
Local authorities have launched damage assessments and are maintaining active emergency response operations across Hatay as the full scale of destruction comes into focus.
