US President, French President affirm that ceasefire agreement between Israel, Lebanon will protect Tel Aviv
(MENAFN) US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon will protect Tel Aviv from the Iranian-backed Hezbollah threat, while establishing the foundation for lasting peace in the region.
Both nations pledged to provide "constructive support" to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces and aid in Lebanon's economic recovery. This commitment was made in a joint statement issued after the Israeli security cabinet ratified the ceasefire deal.
As part of the agreement, Israeli forces are expected to withdraw from southern Lebanon, enabling the Lebanese army to deploy in the border area and address Hezbollah's presence.
The statement further outlined the US and France’s plans to lead international efforts to enhance Lebanon’s military capabilities and foster economic growth, ensuring regional stability. Biden and Macron emphasized that the ceasefire would bring an end to hostilities in Lebanon, protect Israel from Hezbollah, and reduce the influence of other militant groups operating from Lebanon.
The agreement is aimed at restoring peace, with hopes for the safe return of residents to their homes on both sides of the Blue Line.
Earlier, President Biden confirmed that both Israel and Lebanon had approved the ceasefire, which was set to take effect at 10 AM on Wednesday, Beirut time. He assured that the agreement would be fully implemented, without the deployment of US troops in southern Lebanon, and reaffirmed Israel's right to self-defense should Hezbollah breach the ceasefire.
