BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 14. As part of
COP29 in Baku, Trend
News Agency proudly presents COP for Hope, a special project
offering an unparalleled platform to hear from world leaders and
trailblazers in politics, economics, science, and ecology, all
united by a shared commitment to addressing today's pressing
climate challenges.
Editor-in-chief of the environmental news department of
Teleradio Montenegro (RTCG), Daniel Garic, became our next
interviewee.
In an interview with Trend , he stated that currently $1 billion a day is
needed to protect against natural disasters.
Daniel Garic highlighted that this figure is experiencing
exponential growth on a daily basis.
He also mentioned that he had been around the block at several
COP events, and COP29 was the cream of the crop when it came to
organization.
"This is my fourth participation at the COP. This is the most
meticulously arranged conference I have ever attended. The city is
thoroughly equipped for COP29. Throughout Baku, one can observe
meticulously crafted sculptures pertaining to COP29. The COP29
volunteers are very amiable. All necessary resources are present. I
extend my congratulations to Azerbaijan and Baku.
I aim to acknowledge the peril posed by climate change. It
represents the most significant and grave threat to human
civilization. Regrettably, certain global leaders are unwilling to
acknowledge this. At present, the sole global actor is the European
Union.
The European Union possesses a definitive decarbonization
strategy and an exceedingly stringent climate policy. I would not
make that assertion regarding the other players. I believe the
newly elected US President Donald Trump will implement changes. He
is likely to violate the Paris Agreement, posing a significant
threat to human civilization. There is an increasing occurrence of
floods, landslides, and tsunamis globally. The climate crisis is
imminent, and without intervention, the situation will deteriorate
worse.
Currently, we need $1 billion daily for catastrophe mitigation.
The quantity is escalating daily. The impoverished nations in the
Southern Hemisphere face numerous challenges that the Northern
Hemisphere remains largely oblivious to. They merely seek increased
financial gain, as well as oil and gas resources. This is
detrimental to the lives of individuals in the Southern Hemisphere.
Time is lacking. I believe it is not charity; it is their
capability and obligation,” the editor-in-chief emphasized.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will
continue until November 22, was opened at Baku Olympic Stadium on
November 11. The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to
date and is the first time the region has hosted the event in
Azerbaijan.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and
ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate
finance.
In addition to being a top priority that creates the conditions
for action, the creation of climate finance will also contribute to
meeting the 1.5°C commitment by bringing everyone together.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement
signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous
human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP
(Conference of Parties) stands for“Conference of Parties” and is
the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the
Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless
otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first
COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is
located in Bonn.
