Amman, July 30 (Petra) - Head of the Senate's Women's Committee, Khawla Armouti, and the committee member, Dr. Maysoun Otoum, participated in a regional workshop hosted by the city of Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt on "Gender Justice in Legislative Work."
According to a Senate statement on Tuesday, the workshop, which started Monday and continues until Wednesday, saw participation of parliamentary leaders from Arab countries and focuses on action in the field of gender justice in legislative work and the formulation of public policies.
Speaking in the opening session, Armouti said gender justice in legislation and public policies in the Arab world, which is "full of strong, empowered" women, who are "qualified" for leadership, is actually progressing despite facing many ongoing challenges.
Armouti stressed that Jordan has taken "important" steps to address the gender gap and achieve "more equitable" conditions for women.
Over the past few decades, she noted women's political participation in the Arab world has improved, with many countries introducing quotas to ensure women's representation in parliaments.
Armouti pointed to a range of obstacles that could hinder gender justice in politics and legislation in the Arab world, primarily cultural and societal norms, legal discrimination, political instability, and economic barriers.
Additionally, Armouti stated that achieving gender justice requires a "comprehensive" approach that drives legal reforms and sustainable societal change from politicians, civil society and international organizations.
As the Arab world continues to develop, she said the pursuit of gender justice remains an "important" focus, socially, politically, or economically.
