Kahramaa Actively Using AI To Maintain Quality Of Services

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have been integrated into Qatar's water network management systems for decades, dating back more than 50 years, even before the term“AI” was officially introduced, according to an official of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

Speaking to Qatar TV, Engineer Abdulhadi Masoud al-Merri, head of the Water Control Section at the Water Network Operation and Control Department of Kahramaa, said similar smart technologies had already been used in the energy and industrial sectors more than half a century ago.

With the formal emergence and rapid development of AI in recent years, however, these technologies have become more advanced and are now integrated into nearly all operational processes, particularly in the management and supervision of resources.

He said that the introduction of smart electricity meters has enabled both customers and Kahramaa to closely monitor electricity and water consumption patterns during different periods. Using the collected data, Kahramaa can identify variations in demand among subscribers and take the necessary measures to respond efficiently.

According to al-Merri, the use of smart technologies has strengthened Kahramaa's ability to improve its water and electricity supply networks by leveraging accurate, reliable data. This also supports future planning by helping the corporation develop forecasts and strategies grounded in actual consumption trends.

He noted that most operational challenges are anticipated during the planning phase of projects. However, additional challenges may arise during implementation, requiring continuous monitoring and a responsive approach. He cited the sharp increase in electricity demand during the summer months and the decline in winter as examples of fluctuations managed using data from smart systems already in operation.

Al-Merri also stressed that Kahramaa maintains strict standards for water quality across the country. He said the corporation adopts rigorous monitoring procedures supported by advanced technologies, sophisticated equipment, and highly qualified national professionals and technicians.

In addition, Kahramaa operates some of the region's leading laboratories, where continuous testing and measurements are carried out to ensure water quality and operational efficiency, he said.

He added that Kahramaa works closely with the National Planning Council to obtain data, technical information, and expert guidance necessary for future planning and preparation to meet expected demand growth.

According to al-Merri, Kahramaa has increasingly shifted toward smarter, data-driven utility operations, with AI playing a central role in improving the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of water distribution systems across Qatar.

AI is also being used in demand forecasting, where historical records combined with real-time data help predict short-term and long-term water consumption trends. This enables more accurate production planning, optimised pumping schedules, and more efficient allocation of water resources across the network.
