East African country prohibits Ethiopian Airlines trips

(MENAFN) Ethiopian airlines has been informed that its flights to Eritrea will be suspended starting September 30, 2024, as announced on Wednesday. The decision comes from the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority, which communicated the suspension through a formal letter dated July 21, 2024. The reasons behind this significant move have yet to be disclosed publicly.

In a statement released via X (formerly Twitter), Ethiopian Airlines confirmed receipt of the suspension notice but indicated that the specifics regarding the decision were not shared with them. The airline has stated that it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

The suspension follows previous grievances raised by the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority against Ethiopian Airlines. These grievances reportedly included accusations of “malicious trading practices,” “systemic and organized luggage theft, pilferage, damage, and loss with no compensation,” as well as “unjustified and unwarranted price hikes” among other irregularities. Local media has reported on these issues, suggesting that the suspension may be a response to ongoing operational and service-related disputes.

In light of the suspension, Eritrean authorities have advised travelers planning to use Ethiopian Airlines for flights to Eritrea to reconsider their travel arrangements. The broader implications of this suspension for both the airline and its passengers remain unclear, as Ethiopian Airlines awaits further clarification from Eritrean officials.
