CrowdStrike reports configuration update impacted Falcon Sensor, Windows OS

(MENAFN) CrowdStrike reported on Wednesday that a content configuration update for its Falcon Sensor, which is designed to protect critical risk areas on the Windows Operating System, led to a significant global IT outage last week. The American cybersecurity firm explained that the update, released on Friday, aimed to enhance telemetry gathering for detecting new threat techniques. This update is part of the dynamic protection mechanisms employed by CrowdStrike’s Falcon platform.

However, the update, known as the Rapid Response Content configuration, inadvertently caused a crash in Windows systems. This issue affected all Windows hosts running sensor version 7.11 and above that were online and received the update on Friday. Fortunately, the update did not impact Mac or Linux hosts, which were unaffected by this particular problem.

CrowdStrike noted that the defect in the content update was promptly addressed later on Friday. In its preliminary post-incident review, the company indicated that automated recovery techniques and the efforts of strategic service delivery partners helped to expedite the resolution process. The firm expressed deep regret for the incident and thanked its customers and industry partners for their support and assistance during this challenging period.

The global outage resulted in widespread disruptions across thousands of computers worldwide, primarily affecting devices running the Windows operating system. CrowdStrike has committed to thoroughly understanding the issue and implementing measures to prevent a recurrence, aiming to bolster the reliability and security of its services.
