UK’s retail sales drop by 1.2 percent last month
(MENAFN) On Friday, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that retail sales volumes in the UK experienced a decline of 1.2 percent in June compared to the previous month. This decline is part of a broader trend, as sales volumes also decreased by 0.2 percent when compared to the same month in the previous year. Moreover, the data shows a 1.3 percent drop in retail sales volumes when compared to levels from before the pandemic, highlighting a persistent contraction in the retail sector.
A significant factor in this decrease was the 2.1 percent drop in sales volumes for non-food stores in June 2024. This decline follows a notable increase of 3.3 percent in May 2024, suggesting a reversal of the previous month's positive trend. The ONS noted that the downturn was widespread, affecting all retail sub-sectors. Department stores, clothing and footwear retailers, and furniture stores were among the hardest hit, all showing substantial reductions in sales.
The ONS attributed the decline in retail sales to several factors impacting consumer behavior. Retailers have reported that uncertainty surrounding elections contributed to reduced consumer confidence and spending. Additionally, poor weather conditions during the month further discouraged shopping, while low footfall in stores also played a significant role in the reduced sales figures. These factors combined to create a challenging environment for retailers, resulting in the observed decrease in sales volumes.
